Theoretical Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Department

Purpose

Development and innovation of analysis and design procedures in soil mechanics and foundation engineering problems needs to be qualified in fundamental aspects.
Theoretical Soil Mechanics Group has been established for development of design and analytical procedures in soil mechanics with an emphasis on soil modeling, mechanics of porous medias and soil - structure interaction in seismic conditions.

Plan

The plan of the Theoretical Soil Mechanics Group consists of:

  • Theoretical & analytical studies of dynamic behavior of embankment and earth dams;

  • Development and modification of numerical methods in various fields of geotechnical earthquake engineering;

  • Preparing of design earthquake instructions in geotechnical problems.

Projects

Some of the main research projects in this group are:

  • Random reaction of pile foundations subjected to earthquake waves;

  • Dynamic behavior of embankment dams;

  • Seismic design of geotechnical structures.

Engineering Geology Department

Purpose

  • Investigation and study of engineering geological phenomena related to earthquakes;

  • Applied fundamental studies of seismic behavior of rock and soil masses;

  • Analyzing of engineering geological data and preparing projects' related maps.

Plan

  • Study of the relationship between earthquake parameters and engineering geological hazards;

  • Investigations on dynamic behaviors of weak rocks and jointed rock masses;

  • Landslide hazard study of Iran in the form of case studies or province and mega cities hazard zonation;

  • Data providing and presenting the engineering geological models needed for different projects.

Projects

Up to now, the following projects have been done or are in process:

  • The relationship between strong ground motion and landslide;

  • Deep foundation behavior and design;

  • The study of land subsidence due to subsurface cavities with special view on seismic wave-cavities interaction;
