The East of Miyaneh Earthquake of September 26, 2005 (ML= 4.9)
An earthquake with ML=4.9
(on the Richter scale) and Mb=5.1 shook an area 11 km east of Miyaneh at 10:27
p.m. local time on September 26, 2005. The epicenter of this earthquake,
according to the seismograms recorded by the 12 national broad band seismic
stations of IIEES is at 37.35 N and 47.80 E at a depth of 16 km from the sea
level. It should be noted that during the past few months the region between
Bostan Abad, Sarab and Miyaneh has had noticeable seismic activity. Several
earthquakes have previously been recorded by the Iranian National Broad Band
Seismic Network (INSN) of the institute and may be seen on the IIEES website.
The fault causing this earthquake is probably at a Northeast-Southwest trend, as
a system of several faults and parallel ruptures reaching from northeast of
Miyaneh to southwest of Miyaneh near Kangavar (figure 1). Seismograms recorded
at INSN stations are shown in figure (2).
