Understanding where and why seismic risk is high is essential for reducing these losses. Effective risk mitigation depends on innovative and accurate loss models, which must be validated and calibrated using reliable real-world data. Validating these models by repeating past earthquake scenarios requires open, comprehensive databases that capture all critical components of historical events.
