Tehran is moving forward with plans to implement an Earthquake Early Warning System, aimed at improving citizen safety and strengthening crisis management. The initiative is a joint effort between the Tehran Disaster Management Organization and the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES). During a meeting on June 1, the two institutions signed a cooperation agreement regarding the system’s deployment. Ali Nasiri, head of the Tehran Disaster Management Organization, emphasized that the goal goes beyond issuing alerts: “We aim to improve the overall safety of the capital,” he said, noting that the project began years ago in collaboration with Japanese experts. Nasiri also highlighted the challenges of coordinating among agencies, which he described as more complex than technical aspects. Despite this, he expressed hope that the completed system would serve as a model for other major cities. Kambod Amini-Hosseini, President of IIEES, warned that inaccurate alerts could have serious consequences and stressed the importance of precision. The system is being developed in four phases, with the Institute serving as the project’s scientific advisor.
