The Vice-Presidency for Research and Post-Graduate Studies is the main arm of IIEES in executing its research goals and missions, as well as handling the strategic matters of the institute. It is also responsible for planning, managing, and guiding all educational activities of IIEES, overseeing the proper implementation of regulations and educational guidelines, making decisions on educational matters, formulating research policies, and taking necessary measures to expand and improve the quality of education. Additionally, it is responsible for conducting short-term specialized training courses and evaluating them.

Some of its main activities are as follows:

Implementing policies and designing the research strategy;
Supervising the proper implementation of research projects;
Participating and assisting in the strategic plan for graduate studies by introducing research topics.

The main duties of the Research Affairs Management are as follows:

Supervising the proper process of defining research projects, monitoring their progress, and publishing the results and outcomes of these projects.
Participating in the IIEES scientific policymaking to enhance its national and international position, as well as to address the real needs of the country.
Supervising the accurate presentation of statistics and information regarding the IIEES activities and annual performance within the framework of the Executive Committee for Performance Monitoring.

The IIEES Graduate Studies Department aims to train future research and educational professionals for the country’s scientific and research centers, as well as to produce skilled experts in modern sciences related to earthquake engineering. The department also seeks to enhance seismology knowledge across the country by admitting students for both Master’s and Doctoral programs.

Goals of the Graduate Studies Management:

Directing Master’s and Doctoral thesis projects in line with the research IIEES projects aimed at solving the country’s problems.
Training specialized Master’s and Doctoral professionals to meet the country’s needs for skilled experts and to staff academic and research institutions.
Training Master’s-level professionals for the earthquake engineering community to assist with earthquake mitigation programs.

Based on the decisions of the Higher Education Development Council, the research institute has been offering graduate programs at the Master’s and Doctoral levels since 1994. These programs include:

Master’s in Earthquake Engineering: Started in 1994
PhD in Civil Engineering – Earthquake Engineering: Started in 1996
PhD in Geophysics – Seismology: Started in 2001
Master’s in Geophysics – Seismology: Started in 2007

In the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year, 102 students are enrolled in the Doctoral program and 12 students in the Master’s program at the research institute. To date, 194 students have graduated with a PhD, and 507 students have graduated with a Master’s degree from the research institute.

The Library and Documentation Center of the research institute, as one of the richest specialized-research and information centers, began its activities simultaneously with the establishment of the institute in 1990. Its primary goal has been to serve researchers and experts in this field, continually striving to update, expand, and facilitate access to scientific resources. The available resources in the library include books, journals, global reports, research reports, industry relations, articles, standards, theses, aerial photos, maps, videos and photos of domestic and international earthquakes, software, and electronic resources. These materials are primarily offered in specialized fields such as earthquake engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, risk management, and other topics related to IIEES research activities, in both Persian and English.

The library provides services using the comprehensive software system “Simorgh,” and by creating databases and utilizing remote communication networks. In order to achieve its objectives, the library provides services through the following key approaches:

Providing and updating knowledge resources (both print and electronic).
Improving the quantity and quality of library resources, both print and electronic.
Organizing and indexing all scientific resources in the library’s software.
Access to databases through the Megapaper scientific resource acquisition system.
Identifying users’ information needs and offering services tailored to the requested specialized topics.
Offering online services and fast information dissemination through online resource request forms, publication of new library materials, WhatsApp, and email at libraryrequest@iiees.ac.ir.
Training users on the correct and efficient use of library resources through orientation sessions.
Creating suitable opportunities for collaboration with other national and international libraries.

This group is responsible for disseminating the research and scientific achievements of faculty members and researchers, both within and outside IIEES, in the form of books, journals, and brochures. Some of the duties of this section include:

Publishing the results of research and technology projects in the form of research reports or industry collaborations.
Preparing and publishing the quarterly scientific Bulletin of “Earthquake Science and Engineering” since 2015.
Compiling and publishing the quarterly scientific journal “Journal of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (JSEE)” in English since 1999.
Preparing collections of conference papers, seminars, workshops, and training courses of the research institute.
Publishing books authored or translated by IIEES faculty members and distinguished national experts.
Designing and implementing graphic projects, including educational, promotional, and publication materials.
Preparing and publishing the scientific quarterly journal “Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Journal” in Persian from 1992 to 2017.
